Things You Might Want to Consider While Choosing the Best Stick Welder

As you have probably read by now, I have handpicked a few stick welders which would be a great choice for anyone who wants to buy the best product for his or her welding tasks. If you want to go deeper into the specs and choose one for yourself here are some suggestions that you might want to take in mind.

  • How Much Power is Required?

First of all, think of the metal type and thickness you will be working on, which will give you a clear idea of what kind of power will be required during the task. Take note that the size of the electrode is a powerful determining factor as well.

It’s better to know what type of welding you are going to do; the high output of power is necessary for heavy-duty welds and otherwise, 100 amps or so would be just fine.

Input is measured in volts and somewhere around 110v to 120v is enough for household repairs. If you are going for more demanding tasks you might want to increase that or in some cases double it out.

  • The Current Type is a Fact

There are only two types of current types to choose from, AC and DC. AC or the alternating current option is more appropriate for entry-level “Best Stick Welders” and casual workload. AC is preferred when the magnetizing of metals is to be avoided.

The DC type is the most preferred type as it offers an easy arc start along with better stability and smoother operation. You won’t have any real option but DC current if you are going to do overhead and vertical welding. Apart from the magnetizing issue, it is best for almost any type of use.

  • Better Duty Cycle Means Better Efficiency

The duty cycle of a welder means for how much duration you can use it until the machine needs to cool itself down. You should know a full cycle is considered to be 10 minutes.

Many welders get into a time crunch when they do professional or heavy-duty work. A casual hobbyist might not need a higher duty cycle but this is very necessary who needs to run their machine for longer periods. The equation is simple, the better duty cycle will result in better efficiency.

  • Controlling Options Make a Difference

Not just in the case of a stick welder, but while using any sophisticated electrical equipment, proper control is an issue that simply can’t be avoided. If you are a beginner, then the controls should be big enough to maintain while wearing gloves. It is just basic stuff excluding additional hassle.

Duty cycle warning, AC/DC switch, and voltage switches, these are usually seen in heavy-duty welders that require precision and more complicated tuning. Whether you choose simplicity or advanced settings, that is a choice completely for you to make.

  • Safety Is a Must!

When you are hoping to buy a stick welder for your personal or professional work no matter how superior the features are, it is simply not worth buying if it does not have good safety features that can both protect you and your device.

A duty cycle indicator is required to ensure that you don’t overheat it. Thermal overload protection is also mandatory too much heat can be hazardous. If this feature is well installed in the machine, you won’t have to worry about a thing except for your welding craft. Because if the welder gets too hot then it will automatically shut down.

  • You might Want to Carry it Around

Stick welders might get heavy, especially if you want to take the accessories along with it. Look for welding kits that offer a rigid and compact carrying case. A carrying case not only makes the tools more portable, but it also keeps them all together in one place.

Keep an eye out for a handle that often comes with the carrying cases. It will save you a lot of effort in carrying it to “far off” places. A well-built handle or an attachable shoulder strap can be a real lifesaver and I am not joking around.

  • Budget and Cost Ratio

If you are a potential buyer then obviously you have a budget that you don’t want to cross. Understanding the budget to cost ratio is the ultimate key to a successful purchase in any case.

The equation is mostly simple, the more you are willing to spend on your welder, the more features you are going to get. The welders that cost about 200 dollars are definitely more durable than the welders that cost just above 100 dollars.

The premium welders that come at an obvious higher price tend to last long and offer even years of consistent efficiency.

Ever heard the saying, “Cut your coat according to your cloth?” It’s just the same over here.

Why Would I Tell You To Buy a Stick Welder: The Advantages

Obviously, stick welders have their advantages. If you’re not yet convinced after going through stick welder reviews of mine, let me spell it out for you.

  • These are welding machines that people can buy with a limited budget. You don’t have to be super-rich to afford one. You can afford a product under $250 and even under $150.
  • Clearly, you know that these devices are portable. You can take them anywhere (indoor and outdoor) depending on where your welding gig takes you.
  • When you’re working in a confined place, choosing a stick welder is the best option rather than going for its MIG cousins. MIG welders require considerable space to function.
  • TIG or MIG welders might be lightweight compared to these things but you don’t need any gas shielding to work with stick welders. That’s an obvious win in my book.
  • You can use these things for double metal welding or any other type of welding gigs that you want without any sort of trouble whatsoever.

The Disadvantages that You’ll Face with These Products

Life is not a bed of roses. I’m not trying to be a poet here but Stick Welders are not entirely “Good Boys” so to speak. You’ll have trouble using these here and there. Let’s go over some of the drawbacks as well.

Generally, I don’t recommend stick welders for people who are new to welding so to speak. Beginners don’t have the level of skill when compared to a “Pro.” As a result, people will go through electrodes fast. You might need a new electrode after just 5 to 7 inches of welding.

That being said, Prominent brands do have stick welders for beginners in their repertoire.

Another fact to consider is that these are not fit for hobbyists or DIY enthusiasts. Professionals won’t have too much to do with these things as the welding jobs leave something to be desired at the end. Pros will have to go through a spot multiple times if they want it to be perfectly welded. This is due to the low penetration level of the machines.

My Two Cents Before I Part Ways with You!

Okay, I’ve lied to you a tiny bit. Even the best stick welders’ choices differ from person to person and they are plenty in numbers as well. You need to fine-tune your needs and budget to find the ideal product for yourselves. If you’re struggling for choices, I recommend Forney Easy Weld Arc Welder.
